The Pirates won’t make the Playoffs

Pirates fans need to remember that this is only the beginning of a long season.

As the baseball season is in full swing, Pirates fans are either in joy or disbelief at their recent run that currently leaves them with an 8-3 record, putting them in first place in the Central Division. Despite a good run in form by the Buccos, us Pirates fans need to remind ourselves that this is just the start of a very long season.

As a huge Pirates fan, I have grown up with disappointment with many seasons being finished with over one-hundred losses and my favorite players being traded away for pocket change. This situation seems just like what happened in the offseason where we traded away our best player, Andrew McCutchen, and our ace, Gerrett Cole, for a bunch of prospects that will never get called up to the majors, and some cash that would be enough to pay someone’s salary for a month. Us fans have shown our extreme displeasure for these transfers to the point where someone has even made a petition calling for the owner of the Pirates, Robert Nutting, to sell the team to someone who cares about the betterment of the club as many fans such as myself believe he is only in it for the money, not for the love of the great American pastime.

Due to these transfers of unarguably our best players, the Pirates have looked worse on paper. How we aren’t dead last in the MLB is beyond me. What is even more nerve racking, is that other superstars on the team, such as Josh Harrison, have requested to be traded. It’s like they know that the Pirates are a sinking ship and want to get out of it before their careers are destroyed. Hopefully the transfer of other stars such as Harrison and Bell don’t go through because if they do, the Pirates are going to be thrown into a hole they cannot get out of.

Despite the Pirates’ incredible start to the season, we Pirates fans need to remind ourselves that this is only 10-20 games of a one hundred game season. Getting ahead of ourselves will probably cause the Pirates to become overconfident and start to go downhill and probably end up between a rock and a hard place. However, even if the fans have complete faith in a Pirates winning season, the Pirates will not achieve that goal solely because of the recent trades of McCutchen and Cole, and the possible trade of other star players such as Harrison.

So, don’t even think about planning to buy those playoff tickets because it’s not going to happen.
