Bayern Munich thrashes Besiktas
The German giants win 5-0 in Champions’ League first leg.
On the evening of February 20th fans of the German super club Bayern Munich packed into the Allianz Arena in Munich to cheer on their team as they face the Turkish team Besiktas for their first leg of the Champions’ League round of 16. Bayern were already favorites to win the tournament and this game proved just that.
The excitement started early as Besiktas defender Domagoj Vida was sent off in the 16th minute after a bad foul against Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski. However, it took until the 43rd minute for Bayern to score a goal. Captain Thomas Muller scored on a tap in a few feet out. The goal was assisted by David Alaba. The teams went into the locker rooms with a score of 1-0 with Besiktas hoping to bounce back quickly and get an equalizer in the second half. However, that wasn’t the case. Just seven minutes into the second half Bayern winger Kingsley Coman scored on a cross by Robert Lewandowski.
Bayern struck again in in the 66th minute coming from a terrific volley from Thomas Muller assisted by Joshua Kimmich with a lovely cross.
The game went on for another thirteen minutes before Bayern struck again in the 79th minute when Robert Lewandowski scored off a rebound from a saved shot by the Besiktas goalkeeper. Then in the 88th minute, Lewandowski struck again which was assisted by Thomas Muller.
As the final whistle blew in the 90th minute, Bayern fans were jumping for joy while the Besiktas fans who made the trip from Turkey were left wondering what went wrong. Besiktas hopes for a better result in the second leg as it will be on their home field. However, it will be quite a challenge for them because they would have to score at least six goals to move on in the tournament. Besiktas will also need to prevent Bayern from scoring any goals to move on.
The situation seems grim for the Turkish champions as their hopes for a decent push in the Champions’ league dwindled minute by minute in the recent game and it seems like Besiktas would rather crawl into a hole and die than play Bayern again in the 2nd leg of this match-up. However, Bayern will celebrate in their Beer halls as they will easily breeze on into the quarter finals of the Champions League where they will most likely play a tougher team like Manchester City from England, or Real Madrid from Spain.
